Which watch size should you choose? The diameter guide for your wrist
The right watch size is worked out from your wrist circumference: under 16 cm, aim for 36 mm; between 16 and 17.5 cm, 36 to 39 mm; above 17.5 cm, 39 to 41 mm. It is the most reliable rule, and it avoids the most common mistake: buying a watch that is too big because it looks impressive in a photo.
Measure your wrist in thirty seconds
Take a tailor's tape, or failing that a strip of paper and a ruler. Wrap it just above the protruding wrist bone, where the watch is actually worn, without tightening. Note the measurement in centimetres. It is the only figure that counts, well ahead of your height or your build.
- Under 16 cm: 36 mm. A larger diameter will visually overhang the sides.
- 16 to 17.5 cm: 36 or 39 mm. The most comfortable zone, where almost everything works.
- 17.5 to 19 cm: 39 or 41 mm.
- Over 19 cm: 41 mm and above.
Diameter is not the only figure to look at
Two 41 mm watches can wear very differently. Three measurements come into play.
Lug-to-lug
This is the distance between the two ends of the lugs, the parts that hold the bracelet. It is this figure, not the diameter, that decides whether the watch overhangs your wrist. A simple rule: the lug-to-lug should stay smaller than the width of the top of your wrist. A 41 mm case with short, downturned lugs often wears better than a 39 mm with long, straight ones.
Thickness
An automatic watch is mechanically thicker than a battery watch: it has to house a rotor and a mainspring. Under 13 mm, it slides effortlessly under a shirt cuff. Above that, it catches the fabric and is more noticeable.
The dial colour
A light dial reflects the light and makes the case look slightly larger; a dark dial visually compacts it. If you hesitate between two diameters, a black dial lets you take the larger of the two without the watch looking imposing, and a light dial gives presence to a small case.
36, 39 or 41 mm: what it really changes
36 mm is watchmaking's historic diameter. It was the standard size for men's watches until the 1990s, and it is today the most requested unisex format. It is discreet, elegant, and it works everywhere, from the office to dinner. See the 36 mm watches.
39 mm is the modern compromise: present enough to be seen, sensible enough never to get in the way. If you know nothing about watches and do not want to get it wrong, this is the default choice.
41 mm fills the wrist and draws the eye. It is today's standard for so-called men's watches. It needs a wrist of at least 17 cm to stay harmonious. See the 41 mm watches.
The three most common mistakes
- Trusting product photos. In a render, every watch fills the screen. Always compare the figure, not the image.
- Confusing a big watch with a valuable one. The most sought-after watches in history measure 34 to 39 mm. The very large case is a 2000s fashion that has had its day.
