Elegant men's watch: choosing an automatic watch for suits, the office and weddings

An elegant watch is the one piece a man wears with a suit that says something about him without overdoing it. For the office, a wedding, a job interview or a dinner, the rules are simple, and you do not need to spend thousands of francs to follow them. This guide explains which size, dial, bracelet and budget to choose for an automatic dress watch.

Rule no. 1: the watch must slip under the shirt cuff

With a shirt, the watch slips under the cuff and only shows when you move your arm. A thickness of 11 to 12 mm fits under a normal cuff; above 14 mm, the watch catches and pulls the shirt out of shape. As for diameter, 38 to 41 mm suits the great majority of men's wrists; above 42 mm, a watch looks sporty whatever its dial.

Which dial for an elegant watch?

The easiest dials to wear with a suit are white or silver, champagne, midnight blue and black. White and champagne go with everything and look more formal; blue pairs perfectly with a navy or grey suit; black is the most understated. Roman numerals or slim indices give a more classic look, Arabic numerals a more modern one. On a dress watch, avoid graduated dive bezels and multiple sub-dials, which belong to the sporty register.

Steel bracelet or leather strap?

Tradition says a leather strap with a suit. In practice, a steel bracelet with fine, polished jubilee-style links is just as dressy as leather and far more practical: it does not mind sweat or rain, and works with a suit as well as with an open-collared shirt at the weekend. A tip for harmony: match the metal colour of the watch with your belt buckle and cufflinks.

Why choose an automatic watch to wear with a suit?

An automatic watch has no battery: it winds itself through the movement of your wrist, and the seconds hand glides instead of jumping once a second. That smooth sweep is what people notice on a quality watch. As a wedding, graduation or first-job gift, it is also a watch that can be handed down, because it is serviced rather than thrown away.

What budget for an elegant automatic watch?

Between 250 and 400 CHF you find dress watches on Japanese automatic movements, with sapphire crystal and 316L steel: exactly the materials that matter for a watch worn every day at the office. Under 150 CHF, expect quartz or mineral glass that scratches against a desk or a door handle. Above 1,000 CHF you mostly pay for the name and an in-house movement.

Modora elegant watches

The Seikojust collection is our dressiest line: 41 mm diameter, 12 mm thick, Seiko automatic movement, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, 316L steel jubilee bracelet with safety clasp, 10 ATM water resistance. The Seikojust Champagne (CHF 249) is the most versatile with a suit, the Seikojust Roman (CHF 249) the most classic with its Roman numerals, and the Seikojust blue arabic (CHF 249) the most modern.

To show the day of the week as well, the Seikodate Champagne (CHF 249, Seikodate collection) adds a fluted bezel. For a wedding, the Seikojust Roman two tone (CHF 269) combines steel and gold. And for a cleaner style, the Oysteiko Noir (CHF 249, 41 mm, 11 mm thick, black PVD case) plays it completely understated.

Prices are in Swiss francs, shipping is free and tracked (9 to 14 business days, as each watch is assembled to order), the bracelet adjustment kit is included, the warranty is 2 years and you have 30 days to return an unworn watch.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sports watch be worn with a suit?

Yes, as long as it stays slim and understated: a black or blue dial on a steel bracelet works very well at the office. What does not work is thickness: above 14 mm, the watch distorts the cuff.

Which watch should you wear to a wedding?

A white, silver or champagne dial, possibly with a steel and gold finish, on a fine steel bracelet or a leather strap. For the groom, it is also a classic gift from the best men or the family.

What size should a dress watch be?

Between 38 and 41 mm in diameter for most wrists, and ideally 12 mm thick or less to slip under the cuff.
